The two desks
CheapOair vs the airline site: who should sell you the ticket
An OTA is a store. The airline is the operator. For a US parks or city flight, both can be the right first tab. Here is when each one should win.
CheapOair is the default on this lander because most people shopping “cheap flights” are shopping a storefront, not a frequent-flyer cockpit. That is not an insult. It is the actual user. The airline site is still the right tool often enough that we wrote this page instead of a slogan.
What you are buying in each tab
On CheapOair you are buying a ticket that Fareportal’s retail layer found among the carriers it sells. You will still fly an airline. Your confirmation may carry an OTA record locator and an airline locator. Keep both. On the airline site you are buying from the operator. Status, the app, and the delay desk usually live there.
Codeshares and multi-carrier connections are where storefronts earn their keep and also where they hide pain. A “cheap” itinerary that changes airlines in Dallas is two bag policies and two delay cultures. The airline site will sometimes refuse to sell that shape. That refusal is information.
When CheapOair should be the first search
- You do not already live in one carrier’s app, and you want more than one airline on the same results page.
- The week is a real calendar (a Park Week hub, a wedding, a city long weekend) and you need to see mixed-carrier options the airline site will not show.
- You are willing to read bags, seats, and change rules on the checkout — the same work you should do on the airline site.
- You want one place to compare a packaged total rather than opening five airline tabs you will not actually finish.
When the airline site should win
- You have status, a companion certificate, a credit, or a saved traveler that only that carrier honors.
- You already know the flight number because Google Flights or a friend named it, and you want the operator’s change desk.
- The itinerary is one carrier, and the OTA total is not better once bags are honest.
- You need same-day standby, irregular-operations recovery, or an app boarding pass that some OTA tickets still make awkward.
Miles, credits, and the thing we will not promise
OTA tickets sometimes earn miles and sometimes do not, depending on the fare family and how the ticket was issued. We will not print an earn table that will be wrong next quarter. If miles are why you fly that airline, check the airline’s current rule, or buy on the airline. Credits and companion fares are almost always airline-direct.
Park Week is a date problem before it is a points problem
A Zion week that starts after a LAS afternoon arrival is a different ticket than a 6 a.m. “deal” that dumps you into baggage claim with a two-hour drive still to go. Airline-direct will not save you from that. Neither will CheapOair. Pick the arrival that matches the gateway, then shop the store. Park Stay and Park Cabin write the pillow. Park Car writes the keys.
We may earn a commission if you book CheapOair through /go/cheapoair/. We do not earn one from airline.com. That is disclosed so you can discount our default, not so you skip the comparison.
